The specific process is divided into two steps: first, acid is produced by exchange, and the sodium hypophosphite solution is passed through a strongly acidic cation exchange resin (R-SO₃H) containing a sulfonic acid group (-SO₃H), and the reaction R-SO₃H+NaH₂PO₂=H₃PO₂+R-SO₃Na produces a hypophosphorous acid solution; then, the resin is regenerated, and hydrochloric acid is passed through the resin, and the reaction formula is R-SO₃Na+HCl=R-SO₃H+NaCl. This method requires a large amount of resin, and the regeneration and cleaning steps of the resin are cumbersome. It is more suitable for small-batch production, but the purity of the product obtained after concentrating the dilute hypophosphorous acid solution is high.

The yellow phosphorus synthesis and decomposition method is to synthesize barium hypophosphite (or calcium hypophosphite) by heating a concentrated barium hydroxide (or lime) solution with yellow phosphorus, and then decomposing it with sulfuric acid, filtering, and concentrating under reduced pressure to obtain hypophosphorous acid. The relevant reaction formula is: P₄+2Ba(OH)₂+4H₂O=2Ba(H₂PO₂)₂+2H₂,Ba(H₂PO₂)₂+H₂SO₄=BaSO₄↓+2H₃PO₂.

The principle of electrodialysis is based on a series of reactions that occur in the anode chamber and cathode chamber after a direct current is passed through the electrodialysis cell. Anode chamber: H₂O=H⁺+OH⁻,4OH⁻=O₂↑+2H₂O+4e⁻,H⁺+H₂PO₂⁻=H₃PO₂;Cathode chamber: H₂O=H⁺+OH⁻,2H⁺+2e⁻=H₂↑,Na⁺+OH⁻=NaOH. This method is simple, suitable for large-scale production, and produces no wastewater or waste residue, but the purification of the product is difficult.

The high-temperature phosphorus reaction method is that phosphorus directly reacts with oxygen at high temperature to generate phosphorous anhydride or hypophosphorous anhydride, which is hydrolyzed to obtain the corresponding acid, and then separated to obtain hypophosphorous acid and phosphorous acid.
